Learn to ride a horse

My son just has a way with animals that reminds me of Temple Grandin. He seems to be able to form this bond with animals that he can not with humans. He decided that he want to learn how to ride a horse so we could go horseback riding.

I contacted many stables and equestrian centers in the area. I explained our position to them to see if teaching him to ride would be something they were up to. We found a really great lady in North Fort Myers that welcomed him.

At this time he is learning to care for his horse and form a bond with him. He is brushing, bathing and walking his horse. Everyday he becomes more confident when working with the horse. You can see his confidence grow as he is now taking more responsibility for his service dog as well.

Next week will be his first time up on the horse. We are encouraging him and helping him gain confidence in his skills. At first we will work on a lunge line to help him learn to balance. Then from there we will progress as long as he is comfortable. Our goal is form him to be able to do trail rides as a group and maybe participate in 4-H.

When we work with the horses, he must follow all rules at all times. We cover these rules every time before we arrive. The instructor also posted rules in the barn for him. He knows he must do his chores with the horse before we can ride. Brushing the horse and caring for the horse is working on coordination and endurance.
