General theme parks tips

It has amazed me that our children with autism can love theme parks. I never thought that my child with his sensory issues and fears would have a great time in such an overwhelming environment. Many parents have also expressed that their children loves theme parks and seem to relax and come out of their shell.

  • Take a good back pack. I place a small purse in it as well. This allows me to have everything I may need and still have my hands free.
  • Look over park maps before you go. Find the “must do” rides and mark them. Also, look for places to relax, calm down and regroup.
  • Most parks have a Guidebook for Guests with Disabilities or something similar online, take a look at it. It normally shows the family restrooms, first aid station, and tells what to expect on the rides.
  • Bring or buy a refillable park cup to save money. Parks charge reasonable rates for refills and will always fill it with ice water for free. We use the same Spongebob cup at all the parks without an issue.
  • Have boys wear swim trunks and girls wear swim suit under their clothes if it is warm. Bring a change of clothes, just in case.
  • Bring toys. At times there will be lines and wait so be prepared. We take a Nintendo DS, an MP3 player, some cars, stuffed animal and a few fidget toys.
  • Be prepared for your child’s sensory needs. For us, this means always having ear plugs, a small travel blanket, hat and sunglasses.
  • Fight temptation before it starts. In our bag we have some favorite snacks and trail mix so we can eat snacks on the go.
  • Don’t rush it or push it. Know yours and your child limits. Take breaks when you need to and it is better to leave early on a good note, then wait till the breaking point.
