Discovery Cove

Discovery Cove

Munchkin and I attended Discovery Cove as a birthday present to him. On this trip he learned to snorkel. He wore a wetsuit which provided the buoyancy he needed. He spent most of the day in a lagoon without fish. He just enjoyed looking at the rocks in the water and exploring.

My goal of the day was to swim in the lagoon with the fist and rays. Munchkin had no interest in going in and flat out refused. I talked to the life guard and she said it was fine to leave him on the beach and go in. He was in a life jack and stood in 2 foot deep water on the wheel chair ramp. The lifeguard gave him a fish identification chart and he called out the fish to me so I could see them. We worked as a great team and we both enjoyed it.

They do have a few rivers running through the park. These are nothing like the lazy rivers at any water parks. They are deep and an adult has no chance of even touching the bottom. We went through part of one, but he did not enjoy it at all.

We both loved the bird aviary. You get unlimited food to feed the birds and there is a keeper to tell you all about them. He had a few birds land on him and enjoyed feeding them. His favorite part was feeding the baby deer.

Food and drinks are included in the price of admission. They severed really good food with snacks available at all times. Snorkel gear and towels are included. All you need to bring is a swimsuit.

The last part of the day was our dolphin swim. They were told in advance he had autism, but come to find out they go a step beyond. They observe all guests and judge their reactions and place them in groups accordingly. They were amazing with him. He did not want to do the scheduled tricks, like kiss a dolphin so they worked with him. He was the only one who got to tickle a dolphin. They were amazingly patient and answered all his questions. At the end they also offered to allow us to spend additional time with the dolphin alone with a trainer. They were absolutely amazing and I highly recommend visiting for a day.
