I enjoyed watching the pride in your sons eyes after he got Giney in the car. I also am training a Autism service dog for my 9 year old son. Black has helped son feel safe and de escalate in overwhelming situations. At times when son will not hold my hand he will hold onto Blacks lead. thanks for sharing.

Hi Sharon, thanks for stopping by!! You will want to get a guest assistance pass at guest services before entering the park. Let them know that you are traveling with a special needs child who tires easily, can not be in the heat and can not tolerate wait or lines. They will give you the guest assistance pass and most employees provide us one the second we mention autism. Also you can ask for a riders guide which will tell you which rides have wheelchair access (and where it is) but the best part is that it will tell you what to expect on each ride in the way of lights, room, noise and special effects.

I enjoyed reading about how much fun you had. I'm taking my autistic son to Orlando next month. We've been to Disney World before and found the staff to be unfailingly helpful and the GAC meant my son was usually able to ride without too much delay. But I have heard mixed reviews of the service at Universal Studios. A few people have reported having to really fight to get assistance for their autistic children, being told to wait in a family room while the rest of the party queued and that they were ineligible for a fast pass. If that's the case we'll skip Universal but my son is a big Dr Seuss fan so I know he'd love the IOA. It's hard to know what to do!
My son is clearly autistic/ADHD and he'll be using a wheelchair as a portable safe space. Do you have any tips on how to get the best assistance possible for him? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I'm trying to put together a research project documenting how families living with autism are getting support from service dogs. Though it's a small project, it's a start. I really need some families who have worked with service dogs to fill out a survey about their experience, and I'm hoping you can help -- either by filling out the survey, or by passing the message along. . .or both!

The survey, along with my contact info, is here: http://www.homebaseaba.com/autismdogs/

Thank you so much!

Most large cities in the US are used to seeing assistance dogs, and we only see issues in smaller cities (such as our home town) Universal Studios really impressed us this trip and won us over as loyal fans. If you ever have any questions about traveling in the US with as assistance dog, please feel free to ask

Very interesting. We were over in Orlando last year and chose not to take our Assistance Dog because we were unsure how we would be treated but after reading your description of how helpful and understanding everyone was, we'll have to re-think next time we travel.

We actually were a bit disappointed with Walt Disney World - we had been to Disneyland Paris for the past seven years and have always found them most accommodating towards special needs. WDW were not always as helpful or friendly, which was a huge pity.

Many thanks for your reply the other evening, much appreciated.

Enjoyed A Friend like Henry very much. Very actually interviewed on the radio with Nuala Gardner and it was very interesting for listeners to hear about the impact her pet dog had with her autistic son as compared to an trained assistance dog. Nuala Gardner subequently visited Irish Guide Dogs training centre here and is involved in a charity training assistance dogs now in the UK (as far as I know!)

Hey Clive! In the US we have the benefit of there being no national certification or registration. Some states, like Florida and California, provide the same rights to service dogs in training as a fully trained service dog accompany a person with a disability. So I am able to take Giney in public and train her in all different situations to work with my son. Once she is done training, she will have public access rights and be seen by the law exactly the same as a service dog trained by any other organization. The cost of service dogs can be very prohibitive to families ($20,000) and or wait lists of 3+ years so owner training is a valuable option for those willing to put in the time and commitment. Giney will replace Chewy completley by July (that is my goal) Chewy is not happy being at home, but I hope he will adjust, if not, he will go be a therapy dog hopefully so that he is happy. Giney will have all public access skills and a few tasks. We will build on her tasks as her bond grows with my son. A little known fact, in the US, the majority of service dogs are trained by their owners. Also dogs do not have to wear a service jacket or harness, but I highly suggest it. Soon I will do an article on the different training information available, so stay tuned :-)

I was very interested to read that you are training your Assistance Dog yourself. Do you still have the same public access rights with the dog? Does your existing dog - Chewy not feel left out when you take the new dog - Giney out training and have to leave Chewy at home. How long will it take your new dog to be fully trained?

I hope you don't mind me asking these questions but I was just very interested in the idea of you being able to train the dog yourself. I know that there would be huge public access issues here with dogs that didn't come from Irish Guide Dogs and had Irish Guide Dogs harnasses / jackets.

Perhaps when you get a moment you would reply to me.
Many thanks
Fiona

I know some parts of the world have pet passports, the US does not. I am not sure what the requirements are to travel back into your country with a service dog, but to get into the US, Mexico and Bahamas you will just need rabies, a microchip and a health certificate.

We would be really interested in doing this cruise. We live in Ireland and have travelled to France, Spain and Belgium with our Assistance Dog. We have been to Florida, Boston, New Hampshire, Cape Cod in the last 12 months without our Assistance Dog because we were worried about how we would get on with him in the US but a cruise like this sounds like a wonderful idea.

Unfortunately companion animals do not have public access rights under the American's with Disabilities Act. To board the cruise ship animals must meet the criteria of being a service animal. I definitely do understand how different children can be without their companion animals, but it is not allowed. This could be a great time for her to learn and experience service dog life. I know my son would be happy to help her out and let her get to know Chewy. Ian has cruised without Chewy so if you are interested, I can tell you some of the secrets we used to minimize the impact. He loved his cruises even without Chewy.

Can we accomodate companion cats in our room. We haven't gotten a dog yet, are going to. But have 2 cats of 5 years that do lots of needed behaviors that help with my daughter with autism. And she functions a lot lower without them.

Can I ask how old your son is and how much speech he uses? Mine is 11 and is non-verbal. I am trying to see how comparable your experience is to what we may be able to accomplish. We did detroit to orlando non stop and he was 6 then, now his actions are louder (crying) and he is also much stronger. The sitting time would be our issue currently I think :) Great story and very positive, good for you!

I have been to Disney World with my son, who was 7 the last time and is now 10. He is non-verbal and we managed well there because "Disney seems to get it". The fast pass saved us from meltdowns in lines and created a true family vacation in a world that is not prepared to do that very much if you have a family member with autism. Thanks Heather! I have your site linked in a travel and vacation article of mine as I think this is an need for all parents of children with ASD. Find it and related articles about autism at http://www.examiner.com/x-17410-Toledo-Autism--Parenting-Examiner

Keep up the good work!

So sorry to hear about your dog. What a terrible thing to have happen.

I know what you mean about being part of the family. My son just got an autism dog 2 months ago and he's already part of our family. He's a huge help and yes, he goes just about everywhere with us. Nice to hear of another family with one of these great dogs. We even have a blog devoted to our dog Kruizer.

Hope all is well.

i think he will be o.k but my advice is this don't rely on the airline to help you. i was suppost to have someone from the airline waiting at the gate, to help me get to my connecting fligh since i was flying alone with my son for the first time and when i got off the plane no one was there. so know the airport layout especially if you have a connection flight. as for the flight itself he was fine with taking off and landing gum or a candy really does work. the only real big problem i had was all the smells from everyone wearing purfumes. i was thinking next time i would bring lip balm with sense that he does like to help.

Wow ... sometimes I come to the page and there is no updated information (probably a problem w/ where I log on from) even though there is new stuff here. So it's only today that I'm seeing this. I had no idea. I hope Chewy is back on four paws quickly and Munch is okay and not traumatized by the attack. I'm glad you're basically okay, too.

I am so sorry that Chewy was attacked. Hope he is doing much better both physical and emotional. I have had a couple attacks from pet owners to a couple of my service dogs. And like you I would put myself in between the two dogs. My service dog is my life. So yes I understand where you are coming from.

I do not know why some people just stand around looking when their dog is the one attacking. It boggles my mine.

We took Pookie to the Rolex 24 Hour Race @ Daytona this year. She's ten now, and it was the first time her dad and I thought she could handle the sights, sounds, and smells. We also made sure we packed a bag with her favorite drinks, snacks, stuffed animal, plenty of ear plugs, and layers of clothes. (Heather- I like the idea of bringing something for smell... good call!) We did not stay all night, we only stayed about 4 hours, but they were an enjoyable 4 hours. Some advice, if you're planning on doing anything at Daytona International Speedway, wear comfortable shoes! Pookie literally wore holes in her sneakers! The Rolex 24 has a carnival midway set up in the infield. We rode on the giant ferris wheel at sunset- what an awesome view from the top! We learned that Pookie is fascinated by campfires... we had to keep a careful eye that she didn't wonder off and get too close to one of the many campfires people have going. We found a couple of "quiet", well "quieter" places to chill out. One was by Lake Lloyd near the back of the infield. There was one guy doing laps for a world record on a jet ski, but other than that it was kind of peaceful and we could all decompress on the benches. We had to leave the track before the fireworks (around 9:30-10). We were walking out when they started and Pookie had a hard time with that. Overall, it was a great night. We'll definitely do it again next year... who knows, maybe we'll stay longer next time.

Horseback riding is a wonderful experience. I rode in shows when I was younger and I learned so much about animals and responsibility from the experience. I also learned a little more about how to accept direction from others and be accountable for what I do and how I do it. I learned a lot, too, about taking care of equipment -- keeping stuff clean and in good working order. I think Munch is really going to gain a lot from this. You do a great job as a mom; finding him great activities that really develop him. He's a lucky kid.

I've been to both parks several times, not as much as Disney World. I once had an annual pass over three years ago and enjoyed doing most of it all (I'm not an inversion coaster fan.)

The most recent time I went to Universal Studios was when I went to my very first Halloween Horror Night (The theme was Reflections of Fear hosted by Dr. Mary Agana, who was nicknamed "Bloody Mary.") last October. I actually flinched at those freaky costumed characters popping out of nowhere in the haunted houses! My favorite one, by the way, was Doomsday, mostly because my mother, who was with me at that time, watched the movie where the house originated from. The other highlight of the trip was episodes of chainsaw dudes giving me pursuit with their operating instruments all the way to the Mummy ride - twice! The low point was being stuck in Men in Black Alien Attack for several minutes! That was the best day at Universal Studios Florida of my life - being scared of those maniacs who emerge spontaneously while ambling throughout the park!

I for one would not recommend going to USF for Halloween Horror Nights to a child under 13, especially one whose sensory issues that come with his or her autism would be greatly impacted, but I was 19 (I'm now months away from being 20.) at that time I had fun being scared and all that fuddleduddle!

I have been to numerous places in the past as long as I have been an autistic - both Busch Gardens theme parks (one in Williamsburg, VA, and one near my hometown of Dover, FL, in Tampa), two current and one former Carnival Fun Ships, both Disney ships, various Catholic shrines and basilicas, and for the most part, the prestigious Walt Disney World Resort, the most favorable world-class (no pun intended) destination I rave about, having lived an hour from there for almost a decade.

My method of preparation is to read websites of trip reports of the desired destinations and look at a bundle of photos. With me taking online college classes, the flexibility of the schedule enables me to do so.

Thanks for the tips! Whenever Mom proclaims a vacay, I'd always look at websites and photos of the destinations before going!

Thanks for sharing them with us! I live an hour near Central Florida, where my preferable location, the world-renowned (no pun intended) Walt Disney World resort is situated! I am trying to lose weight, so I saved a bundle of calories by making like Chip, Clarice, and Dale (the chipmunk trio of Disney, I call them collectively) and packing my nut-filled trail mix and nutty Kashi bars, along with prepared turkey sarnies. Not only do they provide protein and fiber, but the monounsaturated fats make me thinner and toned in my belly. (Spanish researchers do agree with me, because in their study two years ago, they found out that it prevents belly fat increase!) I have an iPod nano, so I'd listen to my favorite tunes before embarking on the Tower of Terror. I am a theme park fan, and I'd like to have your trip reports coming!

I have to say that I never tire of WDW because riding personal favorites like my favorite ride (hands down) Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, my second favorite, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios, and my mother's favorite, Soarin' at Epcot (my favorite park as well). Greeting with a motley buffet of Disney Characters, including personal favorite Eeyore, Bolt, Goliath the lion, Ron Stoppable, Flik, and the recently-met Max (He's Goofy's son, mind you.) has been so ritualistic and memorable! Having given a steady dose of Disney movies and videos as a child (Now that I have high-speed Internet, I use YouTube and photos from various trip reports, mainly from Flickr.), I become progressively familiar with that place. I'd recommend making a picture book by cutting out photos of the resort and sharing it with your child before your trip. It really worked for me!

Don't forget that the resort is celebrating its campaign this year based on a rhetorical question, "What Will You Celebrate?" My birthday falls on a block-out date in my pass, so I registered myself to get in free! (You can do that too at disneyworld.com!) Not only I'm celebrating my birthday, but I'm also celebrating the very last day of analog TV in the remainder of stations slated to go all-digital and Philippines Independence Day! As a Fil-Am, I say, GO FIGURE!

As long as I'm autistic and an avid Disneyphile, I've been to WDW several times! In fact, I really like your tips because I live an hour near the resort (in Plant City) and I recently obtained a Seasonal Pass last Christmas! I especially rave about afternoons and evenings, since the cooler weather and (only at the Magic Kingdom) SpectroMagic, my mother's and my favorite parade of the entire resort fit the bill. (Note that we sometimes do early mornings too, especially at Disney's Animal Kingdom, if weather permits.) I have yet to see Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party (I'm going to dress up as the cellphone boyfriend from a recent Ad Council public service announcement - if my mother and I decide to go.), but I went to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party over 3 years ago. Oh, and our passes have a park hopping ability, so we can go to the two "kingdoms" (Disney's Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom, respectively) in one day! How neat!

That looks like it would be a great toy for service dogs to play with while proofing their retrieving. Glad your son and your son dog loves playing with it.

I didn't even know about this part of Busch Gardens. Sounds incredible. Having explored Busch Gardens with the two of you before, I know how well they opperate and how much fun Munchkin usually has. I wish I had been able to go with you.

Your site kicks butt, by the way!
