Autism Service Dog Training Information

When looking to train your own autism service dog, you do not want to rush in. You will enjoy the process a lot more, feel more confident, face less stress, and build a better bond by taking your time. You will want to research the breed of dog, the breeder or rescue, find a local trainer, have the puppy temperament tested and prepare your home all before you pick up your puppy.

I highly recommend reading The Golden Bridge: A Guide to Assistance Dogs for Children Challenged By Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities before you continue much further down your path to train an autism service dog. This book will lift your spirits, let you dream and help you determine where to start your training. This book highly recommends NorthStar dogs, but also includes a temperament test to evaluate puppies on your own.

For inspiration to keep you motivated during the training process I suggest reading A Friend Like Henry: The Remarkable True Story of an Autistic Boy and the Dog That Unlocked His World

I personally also recommend Teamwork so that you can see the high standards a service dog should live up to. This book helps with public access training and also includes some basic task training.
